Monitoring & Targeting
Energy monitoring is the continuous collection of site energy data and its regular analysis with a view to continually identifying energy-saving opportunities. The rich depth of data gathered enables site energy performance to be optimised and continuously compared to the original benchmark of the site’s energy performance. It is a management approach which is facilitated by metering and information technology.
PowerTherm can assist in identifying your monitoring requirements, and procuring a suitable system. Our energy surveys provide the basis of setting targets for reduced energy use.
At single sites with relatively low energy use, a well-constructed excel spreadsheet of historical electricity use and gas provides a simple form of monitoring and targeting. Indeed, electricity suppliers often offer internet-based monitoring of historical electricity use. |

For larger sites, particularly where submetering is appropriate, a range of monitoring and targeting software packages are commercially available. The software must be connected to the metering, usually via the client’s building management system. Energy use can be monitored real-time.
For multiple sites, clients may opt for internet-based monitoring, which enables comparison between sites. Such a system was developed by UCD, in conjunction with PowerTherm, and is used at UCD, DCU and Trinity College. This system is a key element in the strategy to reduce energy consumption in the e3 Energy Management Bureau. To see this system operate real-time, go to Dublin College University
In all cases, targets can be set based on energy saving measures identified during an energy survey or, in the case of multiple sites with similar characteristics, best practice. |
