Position: Energy Consultant - Project Engineer (part time)

PowerTherm is interested in receiving applications for the part-time position of Project Engineer - Energy Consultant. (Full time candidates also considered)

This is an excellent career opportunity for an engineer to join an expanding SME in the rapidly developing energy sector. The successful applicant will be encouraged to become a Chartered Engineer. They will receive formal training to become a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP). The position will be based in Blackrock, Co. Dublin, but will include regular travel to client sites and may incorporate a specific portion of time on site each week.


Reporting to the Managing Director the successful candidate will have responsibility for:

         Undertaking energy and condition surveys, preparation of the associated detailed reports including the quantification of the possible savings.

         Planning and supervising the implementation of energy saving measures.

         Designing, procuring, and organising energy efficient repair, retrofit and installation projects.

         Reviewing energy reports, identifying issues, proposing solutions and communicating these to the client.

         On a day to day level the successful candidate will undertake a range of activities, including:

         Desk-based analyses of clients energy use.

         Site surveys to identify main energy consumers and factors driving energy use.

         Assessing building services plant and equipment including HVAC, chillers, boilers, air compressors, pumps and the associated controls (BEMS).

         Measurement of energy consumption by direct instrumentation use e.g. ammeter, power recorder, flue gas analyser, flow meter, manometer to quantify energy use and plant and/or system efficiency.

         Identification of energy saving opportunities, quantifying the likely savings and associated cost-benefits.

         Highlighting and providing cost-benefit analysis of energy retrofit projects, such as HVAC upgrade projects.

         Reviewing existing installation and prepare detailed design of new installation, description of system control, PSDS.

         Preparation of tender documentation and associated administration in accordance with public procurement requirements.

         Supervision of contractor works, project commissioning, system testing, resolution of snags, completion of required documentation.

         Measurement and verification of energy savings.

This work will offer significant potential for the employee to broaden their skill-set and experience.

Desired Skills and Expertise

Applicants must hold mechanical or building services engineering qualification (Level 7 or 8), with over 3 years of relevant practical experience.

The applicant must have good written and verbal communication skills, and strong numeracy skills. They must have a solid understanding of best practice building services. They must be self-motivated, well-organised, flexible, conscientious and hard working.

Experience undertaking energy audits would also be an advantage, but is not essential, as on the job training will be provided.

In order to travel to clients sites, the candidate must have their own means of transport.

Applicants should be prepared to work in a small business environment and have an understanding of the implications of this.

Position - Energy Engineer - Internship (6 months)

The intern will gain practical experience in the field of energy engineering while working within a consultancy environment.

The intern will receive formal/informal training in the following areas;

         Identification of energy reduction measures on our client's sites as well as aiding senior engineers in managing their implementation.

         They will be involved in compiling reports, and manipulating data to the required format for presentation. An understanding of the principles of how energy savings can be achieved will also be provided.

         There may be opportunities to gain experience in the maintenance management side of the business.

         On completion the intern will have attained skills in energy auditing and effective report writing.

The successful intern will need to be able to work well both in a team and on their own. Attention to detail is a key characteristic, and the candidate must be willing to work within a small, quiet consultancy environment. Should the intern prove that they have the right skills, attitude and aptitude for the job it is intended that this internship will become a full time role.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is essential.

Qualification Details

A NFQ level 8 qualification in an energy/building services/ mechanical or electrical engineering subject is essential.(A level 9 qualification in one of these areas is an advantage.)

This is a 6 months internship, which is being filled through the Jobsbridge programme.

Mentoring shall be provided by a member of the Engineering department.

An allowance of 50euro per week will be paid by the state in addition to the intern's current Social Welfare payments.

The candidate must fulfil the eligibility criteria and must be getting certain social welfare payments or signing for credits for at least 3 months.
